Lady Bird: Music

I knew I had to include the perfect senior year movie in this memoir somehow, but I struggled for a while to decide what aspect of my life I should connect it to since I relate to many different aspects of Lady Bird’s character. I decided that a playlist would be the best way to showcase all of these aspects while also focusing on our shared love of listening to music.

Lady Bird and Josie’s Senior Year Playlist:

  • Fifteen by Taylor Swift: As Taylor looks back on her freshman year, the standout lyric for me is “Back then I swore I was gonna marry him someday / But I’ve realized some bigger dreams of mine.” In those two lines she perfectly describes what it’s like to realize what your real priorities are in high school. Don’t take anything that happens in high school too seriously because it’s such a short period of your life.
  • Roses (Imanbek Remix) by SAINt JHN: I have no emotional attachment to the lyrics or anything of this song but I listened to it a ton at the very start of the pandemic, so now I can’t listen to it at all without the memories of that time period being burned into my brain. It was one of the first songs I discovered through TikTok and got really into.
  • Comme Des Garcons by Rina Sawayama: This was my most listened to song of 2020, so I couldn’t not include it! It’s the perfect song to listen to to hype yourself up before an important event or interview.
  • Universe by Loona: My group of friends has been obsessed with the girl group Loona for years now, and this is my favorite song by them. It has a really dreamy and optimistic sound to it, with a really cute message of making your dreams come true.
  • Grow by Conan Gray: Conan wrote this song as he was graduating high school, and it is the perfect way to end my playlist on a hopeful note. He acknowledges the mixed feelings of trepidation and excitement that come with looking to one’s future and leaving a hometown.
